Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a bold statement on Sunday, declaring that he would "immediately" step down from his position if it meant Ukraine could secure membership in NATO.

"If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready. … I can exchange it for NATO," Zelenskyy said at a press conference in Kyiv, emphasizing that he would resign without hesitation if necessary.

His remarks highlight Ukraine’s desperation to gain stronger military alliances as it continues to fight against the Russian invasion.

Zelenskyy also addressed former U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to "understand" Ukraine’s position and provide concrete security guarantees to help defend the country against Russia.

"I want very much from Trump understanding of each other," he said, stressing the importance of U.S. support.

Progress in Ukraine-U.S. Security & Resources Deal

The Ukrainian leader also revealed that talks were progressing between Kyiv and Washington regarding a potential agreement.

Under the proposed deal, Ukraine would grant the U.S. access to its natural resources in exchange for security assistance.

"We are making progress," Zelenskyy stated, adding that Ukrainian and U.S. officials had been in touch earlier in the day to discuss the matter.
