New Delhi: Just like R Ashwin retired from international cricket in the middle of the series, in the same way in 2014, Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from red ball cricket in the middle of the series against Australia. Dhoni had said that he was bored of Test cricket and wanted to pack his bags. This was revealed by the then coach Ravi Shastri.

Ravi Shastri said, 'Dhoni did not wait. I was the coach at that time. He said, Ravi, I need to talk to the boys for five minutes. Since we had drawn the game at the MCG, I said definitely talk to them. I thought he would say, 'Boys, great' but instead he just said thank you. I am done with it.

Shastri further said that when he came there, he said that there is still one test match left. He gave a speech of five minutes. There was no tantrum, no pretense. He said thank you very much for your support. You know, I will not be in Sydney. But I have full support for you people.

He said, 'Nobody had any idea that he would come and say this. He had played 94 or 95 Test matches. You know that in India, if a player of his stature plays his 100th Test match and if that Test match was in Ranchi, then the whole city would have been on the ground to celebrate that 100th Test. But there was nothing like that for him. He just said, 'I want to pack my bags. I am bored of Test cricket.'
