Richa Ghosh played a sensational knock, slamming a brilliant half-century to lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a historic 6-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants (GG) in the opening match of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025. The defending champions chased down a massive target of 202 runs in just 18.3 overs at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Friday, setting a new record for the highest successful run chase in the history of the tournament.
Richa Ghosh's Match-winning Knock
Ghosh was in scintillating form, scoring an unbeaten 64 off just 27 balls, guiding RCB home in a spectacular fashion. Ellyse Perry also played a crucial role in the chase, contributing 57 runs off 34 balls. Raghvi Bist and Kanika Ahuja chipped in with valuable contributions, scoring 25 and 30 runs respectively. Their collective efforts helped RCB complete the chase with ease, despite a challenging target.
For Gujarat, skipper Ashleigh Gardner tried to make an impact, picking up two wickets, while Deandra Dottin and Sayali Satghare claimed one wicket each, but it wasn't enough to halt RCB’s chase.
Gujarat Giants Set a Fiery Total
Batting first, Gujarat Giants set a daunting target, largely due to a fiery innings from captain Ashleigh Gardner. She top-scored for her team with an explosive 79 not out off just 37 balls, including eight sixes and three boundaries. Beth Mooney supported well, scoring 56 off 42 balls, providing a solid foundation for Gujarat’s total. However, the rest of the batters failed to deliver, leaving the team with a total of 202 runs.
Deandra Dottin also contributed 25 runs in the innings, but the lower order couldn't add much. For RCB, Renuka Singh was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets, while Kanika Ahuja, Georgia Wareham, and Prema Rawat each took a wicket to keep Gujarat's total in check.
