
New Delhi: Veteran BJP leader Debendra Pradhan, father of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 84 due to age-related ailments.
Pradhan, a prominent figure in Odisha politics, served as a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and was a three-time president of the BJP in Odisha. He breathed his last at his son’s official residence at Teen Murti Lane, New Delhi.
Nation Mourns the Loss of a Dedicated Leader
Leaders from across the political spectrum paid tribute to Dr. Debendra Pradhan, acknowledging his contributions to Odisha’s development and national politics.
President Droupadi Murmu's Tribute
President Droupadi Murmu, who had known Pradhan for years, expressed her condolences:
“Having known him for years, I had the opportunity to witness his dedication to public service and his contribution to the development of Odisha and the nation. My heartfelt condolences to his son Dharmendra Pradhan, his family, and admirers.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Pays Floral Tribute
Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally paid his respects and praised Pradhan’s efforts in strengthening the BJP in Odisha.
“Dr. Debendra Pradhan Ji made a mark as a hardworking and humble leader. His contribution as an MP and Minister is noteworthy, especially in the areas of poverty alleviation and social empowerment. Pained by his passing. Om Shanti.”
Modi visited Teen Murti Lane to offer his last respects and console the bereaved family.
BJP Chief JP Nadda’s Tribute
BJP President JP Nadda highlighted Pradhan’s dedication to the party and public service:
“Along with strengthening the BJP in Odisha, his contribution to public service is unforgettable. I express my deepest condolences to the family. May God grant peace to the departed soul.”
Several Union ministers also gathered at his residence to pay their respects.
A Life Dedicated to Politics and Public Service
A doctor by profession, Debendra Pradhan transitioned into politics from Talcher, starting at the grassroots level.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi praised his efficiency as a Union Minister and his deep connection with the people:
“He had discharged his duties with efficiency and dedication. As a public representative and MP, he won the affection of the common people through his welfare initiatives.”
Odisha Governor Haribabu Kambhampati called him a leader devoted to the state's progress and people’s welfare.

Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik highlighted his unwavering personality and strong organizational skills, stating:
“Odisha has lost an influential political figure and a popular politician.”
Final Journey: A Hero’s Farewell
Later in the evening, Pradhan’s mortal remains were brought to Bhubaneswar from New Delhi.
Police honored him with a guard of honor at the airport.
Odisha CM, Chief Secretary, DGP, and BJP leaders were present.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida recalled his commitment to BJP, stating:
“He joined the BJP when people were hesitant to associate with it. Despite being a doctor, he dedicated himself to the party from its inception in 1980.”
With his passing, Odisha and India have lost a stalwart leader whose legacy of service and commitment will continue to inspire generations.
