US Open 2024, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden: India's challenge in the men's doubles of the US Open tennis tournament ended with the defeat of Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden in the third round. The second-seeded pair of Bopanna and Ebden lost 1-6, 5-7 in 66 minutes to the 16th-seeded Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in a match played on Sunday night.

Bopanna and Ebden won the men's doubles title at the Australian Open earlier this year. The 44-year-old Bopanna has already announced his retirement from Davis Cup and it will be interesting to see if he will take the court to defend his title at the Australian Open in January 2025. Sumit Nagal was knocked out of the men's singles with an opening-round loss, while Yuki Bhambri and N Sriram Balaji had earlier lost in the men's doubles at different stages of the tournament.

Bopanna's challenge still remains in the mixed doubles where he has paired up with Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi. Interestingly, he and Ebden will now face each other. Ebden and Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova have been given the fourth seed in the mixed doubles.
