The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday dismissed concerns over school closures and teacher shortages, affirming that no operational school has been shut down, except those declared dilapidated. The government also emphasized its efforts to improve education quality and accessibility across the state.
No Decision to Shut Schools, Says Minister
The issue was raised in the UP Assembly by Samajwadi Party MLA Dr. Ragini Sonkar, who expressed concerns over reports of school closures and the availability of trained teachers.
Responding to the query, Minister of State for Basic Education Sandeep Singh clarified:
"No decision has been taken to close any school where students are studying and which has not been declared dilapidated. Instead, the government is focused on enhancing school quality and accessibility through the CM Model Composite School initiative, similar to Atal Residential Schools.”
Key Development: The process of setting up CM Model Composite Schools has already begun in 57 districts across Uttar Pradesh.
Teacher Availability & Adjustment Process
Addressing concerns regarding teacher shortages, Singh reassured that the overall student-teacher ratio in the state is balanced, but some schools do face a shortage of teachers due to higher student numbers.
The minister explained:
“We have enough teachers, but some schools have an imbalance in student-teacher distribution. To fix this, the government started a teacher adjustment process, but it was challenged in court and is currently on hold. Once resolved, no school in UP will have an improper student-teacher ratio.”
Teacher Training & Digital Learning Initiatives
The UP government has also prioritized teacher training and digital education.
Key Training Initiatives:
1,65,299 teachers have received training under various programs in the 2024-25 academic session.
ICD labs established in all 880 development blocks to support digital learning.
Smart Classroom Initiative:
Each classroom to be equipped with two tablets.
Smart class facilities being introduced in primary and upper primary schools.
UP Government’s Commitment to Education
The Uttar Pradesh government remains committed to improving school infrastructure, teacher availability, and digital education. With no school closures planned and a focus on world-class learning environments, the state aims to enhance the quality of primary education for all students.
