Supreme Court on Caste Census: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider a petition requesting direction to the Center to conduct socio-economic caste census for the welfare of backward and other marginalized classes. The court said that this issue falls under the jurisdiction of the government.
This request was made in the petition
A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti allowed petitioner P. Prasad Naidu to withdraw his petition, in which he had requested for directions to expedite the calculation of data for the census. The bench told senior advocate Ravi Shankar Jandiala and advocate Shravan Kumar Karanam, appearing for the petitioner, "What can be done about this? This issue falls under the jurisdiction of the government. This is a policy matter."
The court cannot interfere in this matter
Jandiala said, 'The 1992 Indra Sawhney judgment (Mandal Commission judgment) states that this census should be done periodically.' The bench told him that it was dismissing the petition as the court could not interfere in this issue.
Sensing the attitude of the court, the advocate sought permission to withdraw the petition, which was granted by the bench.
