New Delhi: Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to lead the men’s national cricket team during their much-anticipated tour of England in June 2025. This decision comes after his remarkable leadership in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, where India clinched the title with an unbeaten run.
Questions Over Rohit Sharma’s Future in Test Cricket
India’s red-ball campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 took a major hit after back-to-back series losses against New Zealand (3-0) and Australia (3-1). These defeats meant India failed to secure a spot in the WTC final, raising questions over Rohit Sharma’s Test career, especially considering his age (37) and inconsistent batting form.
Adding to the speculation, Rohit opted out of India’s final Test against Australia in Sydney, citing lack of form. While he made it clear that retirement was not on his mind, reports emerged that selectors were considering moving on from him to prepare for a new era in Indian cricket.
Rohit Sharma’s Leadership Seals His Spot as Test Captain
However, Rohit’s leadership in the Champions Trophy proved to be the defining factor in his captaincy continuity. Under his guidance, India won the prestigious 50-over ICC event for the third time, after victories in 2002 and 2013. His captaincy, tactical acumen, and ability to inspire the team impressed the BCCI and selectors, leading them to reaffirm faith in him for the upcoming Test series against England.
As per a report by The Indian Express, Rohit is set to retain his Test captaincy for the five-match series against England from June 20 to August 4, 2025. With BCCI’s backing, he will lead the team in red-ball cricket despite earlier doubts over his long-term future in the format.
India’s Dominance in ICC Events Under Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma has been instrumental in India’s success on the global stage, securing two ICC trophies within a short span.
- T20 World Cup 2024 (June) – India won all nine matches, lifting the trophy.
- Champions Trophy 2025 (February-March) – India remained undefeated, winning all five matches, including the final against New Zealand by four wickets.
The Champions Trophy triumph was particularly impressive as India played all their matches in Dubai, after refusing to travel to Pakistan, which was the original host.
With his legacy further cemented by these ICC titles, Rohit Sharma will now look to lead India’s charge in England, aiming for a strong performance in the highly anticipated Test series.
