New Delhi: Rekha Gupta, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Delhi, is set to take charge with major expectations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership and the Central government. With a landslide victory in the recent assembly elections, where the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, the party is keen to deliver visible results within the first 100 days to justify the people’s trust, BJP sources told
Top Priorities for the New Delhi Government
According to party insiders, five key issues will dominate CM Rekha Gupta’s immediate agenda:
Ayushman Bharat Rollout – Implementing the health insurance scheme in Delhi, a long-pending demand.
Yamuna River Cleaning – Accelerating efforts to clean the heavily polluted river.
Road & Sewer De-silting – Preparing the city’s drainage system before the monsoon season.
Citywide Sanitation Drive – A massive effort to clear garbage from Delhi’s streets and corners.
Road Repairs – Addressing damaged roads across the capital.
These issues could be the focus of the new cabinet’s first meeting, which is expected to take place after the oath-taking ceremony on Thursday.
RSS Influence on Leadership Selection
Gupta’s appointment reflects the influence of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Delhi’s leadership choice. Senior BJP leaders JP Nadda and Rajnath Singh met RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat in Delhi just before the legislative party meeting, where Gupta was officially named CM.
Her selection aligns with the RSS’s push for a "grassroots leader" capable of delivering both good governance and visible performance. As a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, Gupta is no outsider—she has deep RSS and BJP roots, having been:
- A former Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president in the late 1990s.
- A municipal councillor in Delhi.
- A key member of the BJP’s Delhi Mahila Morcha (Women’s Wing).
Her appointment is significant, given that the BJP currently has no woman Chief Minister in the country.
BJP’s Strategy: Delivering on Election Promises
BJP leaders emphasize that their first priority is to deliver tangible changes, ensuring Delhiites see a difference from the AAP government’s tenure over the past decade.
A senior BJP leader told CNN-News18:
"The new CM and her team have their work cut out to show a difference from how AAP ran the government. This was also the Prime Minister’s promise during the campaign. The new team will work in mission mode to ensure changes are experienced by the people."
Another key priority will be tabling pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports in the first session of the new Delhi assembly. There are over a dozen pending reports, and sources suggest these could be used to scrutinize the previous AAP government’s financial dealings.
With high expectations from both BJP leadership and Delhi’s voters, CM Rekha Gupta has little time to settle in before tackling major governance challenges. Her ability to deliver results quickly will define Delhi’s new political era, especially after 27 years of BJP waiting to reclaim the capital’s leadership.
What do you think? Will Rekha Gupta’s government bring a major transformation to Delhi?
