New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in the Lok Sabha on Saturday that India is known as the 'Mother of Democracy' today. He said that our country is not only the largest democracy, but we are also the mother of democracy. Responding to the discussion on '75 years of glorious journey of the Constitution' in the House, PM Modi said, "India's democracy India's republican past has been very rich, has been inspiring for the world and that is why India is known as the 'Mother of Democracy' today. We are not just a huge democracy, but we are the mother of democracy."

On this occasion, PM Modi also presented the statements of three great men in front of everyone in the Parliament. He said that when I am calling India the 'Mother of Democracy', then I want to present the quotes of three great men before this House… I am referring to the discussion that took place inside the Constituent Assembly…

1. Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon said , “After centuries, once again such a meeting has been called in our country which reminds us of our glorious past when we were independent, when meetings were held in which learned people used to meet to discuss important matters of the country.”

2. The second quote I am reading is of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , who was also a member of the Constituent Assembly.
He said, “The republican system is not new for this great nation. It has been here since the beginning of history.”

3. And the third quote I am quoting is from Babasaheb Ambedkar ji. He had said, "It is not that India did not know what democracy is. There was a time when there used to be many republics in India."

PM Modi further said that India is taking very strong steps towards becoming the third largest economic power in the world very soon and the resolve of 140 crore countrymen is to make it a developed India by the centenary year of independence.
