Assam Assembly Jumma break: There will be no Jumma break in Assam Assembly now. Himanta Biswa Sarma government has abolished the two-hour break for Jumma Namaaz. On this move of the government, Minister Pijush Hazarika said that this is an important step towards achieving real secularism in Assam. Assam Assembly has abolished the two-hour holiday given every Friday for Jumma Namaaz. This practice of holidays was started by the Sadullah Muslim League in the colonial era.

CM Himanta called the decision historic

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has praised the decision to end the Friday break. He said that 'this has emphasized productivity and it is a move away from the colonial burden.' The CM said that this practice started in Assam in 1937 and it was started by Syed Sadulla of the Muslim League. Sarma said, 'I thank Speaker Biswajit Daimary Dangoria and the MLAs for this historic decision.' A day earlier, the Assam government has made it mandatory to register marriage and divorce in the state.

All pre-registrations remain valid

The Assam chief minister, while answering questions in the assembly on Thursday, said all previous registrations done by the Qazis will remain valid and only new marriages will come under the purview of the law. "We are not interfering at all in marriages conducted as per Islamic customs under the Muslim Personal Law. Our only condition is that marriages prohibited by Islam will not be registered," he said. Sharma said that with the implementation of this new law, child marriage registration will be completely stopped.

The aim is to ban polygamy

The 'Object and Reason' of the Bill states that it has been proposed to prevent child marriage and marriages without the consent of both parties. Mohan said it would help curb polygamy, enable married women to live in in-laws' houses, claim the right to maintenance, and also help widows get their right of inheritance and other benefits and privileges to which they are entitled after the death of their husbands. He said the Bill would also prevent men from abandoning wives after marriage and strengthen the institution of marriage. Earlier, Muslim marriages were registered by Qazis. However, this new Bill will ensure that all marriages in the community are registered with the government.
