New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide the medical and magistrate investigation report related to the death of gangster and leader Mukhtar Ansari to his son. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S.V.N. Bhatti considered the arguments of senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Umar Ansari. Umar said that the state government has not provided the medical and magistrate investigation report related to his father's death. 63-year-old Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar, died on 28 March 2024 at a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly due to a heart attack.

Mukhtar Ansari, who was in jail since 2005, had more than 60 criminal cases pending against him and was convicted in the murder case of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. Before his death, the son approached the Supreme Court in December 2023 and appealed for a direction to send his father to another jail outside Uttar Pradesh, fearing a threat to his life. The state government had assured the bench in 2023 that if necessary, it would strengthen the security of Mukhtar Ansari inside the Banda jail so that no harm comes to him.

On Thursday, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, said that the documents would be provided to Omar. The bench noted that Mukhtar Ansari's postmortem had been conducted and a magisterial inquiry was also conducted later. The Supreme Court asked the state government to provide copies of the medical and investigation reports to Omar within two weeks. He can then file his reply within three weeks.

Umar's petition said that when his mother approached the Allahabad High Court for Mukhtar Ansari's protection, the court had ordered to increase his security in May 2024. At the time of Mukhtar Ansari's death, his brother and Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari had alleged that Mukhtar was being given 'slow poison' in jail. The authorities had denied this allegation.
