In a deeply troubling incident, a young girl was harassed at a fair in Maharashtra, sparking outrage and calls for strict punishment. The incident has brought attention to the increasing cases of crimes against women and the need for stronger enforcement of laws.
Incident at the Fair
Former Minister Eknath Khadse revealed that his daughter was among the victims of harassment. “The night before last, my daughter went to the fair, and this incident took place. Some boys harassed her,” he said. The shocking revelation has added urgency to the case, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
Government's Response
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the incident, labeling it a “cheap act.” He assured that the police had taken immediate action by registering a case and arresting one suspect while searching for the remaining six. "This kind of harassment is wrong; they cannot be forgiven, and strict action will be taken against them," Fadnavis stated.
Legal Action Taken
The police have filed a case under multiple sections, including the POCSO Act, Molestation, and the IT Act. SDPO Muktainagar Krishnat Pingale provided details, stating that on February 28, 2025, during a yatra in Muktainagar taluka’s Kothali village, a group of seven men—including Aniket Ghui and his friends—stalked and molested multiple girls. Given the severity of the crime, stringent legal provisions have been invoked.
Pattern of Criminal Behavior
Eknath Khadse pointed out that these youths have been involved in criminal activities before. “These boys are hardened criminals. In Maharashtra, crime against women has increased. Criminals are not afraid of the police. Girls do not come forward to lodge complaints. Parents believe that the names of their daughters should not be disclosed. We complained as we had no option left," he stated.
Political Reactions
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Rohini Khadse questioning women’s safety in Maharashtra. "If an incident like the molestation of a Union Minister’s daughter can happen in Maharashtra, how will women and girls from ordinary families get justice?" she asked.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam assured that the government would ensure the strictest punishment for the accused. "This kind of mentality, which is disgraceful and claims to be a fight for protest, will not be tolerated. All those involved will be put behind bars," he asserted.
Call for Justice
The case has once again raised concerns about women's safety in Maharashtra. Many are calling for stricter laws, faster trials, and harsher punishments to deter such incidents. With the police intensifying their search for the remaining accused, the case is expected to be closely monitored in the coming days.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for society and law enforcement to work together in ensuring a safer environment for women.
