Beirut. The media chief of the Hezbollah terrorist group was killed in an Israeli airstrike in an area of Lebanon's capital Beirut on Sunday. Two Lebanese security sources told Reuters that Hezbollah's media chief Mohammed Afif was killed in the attack in the Ras al-Nabaa area. A Hezbollah official also confirmed the killing of Mohammed Afif to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did not immediately comment on the attack. Unlike dozens of other Israeli attacks in Beirut over the past week, the attack that killed Afif did not take place in Beirut's southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold. Lebanese media reported that the building where Afif was targeted housed the offices of the Syrian Baath Party. The IDF also did not issue an evacuation warning before the attack, as it was a targeted attack and not intended to target Hezbollah's infrastructure.
Afif was particularly in the news after Israel's military action in September and the killing of longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was also killed in an Israeli airstrike. Last month, Afif had to interrupt a press conference in Dahiyeh when the IDF's Arabic-language spokesman, Colonel Avichai Adraee, issued an order for residents of the area to evacuate ahead of airstrikes.
On Sunday, the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) said it had completed a series of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Dahiyeh. According to the army, fighter jets targeted the command room and other infrastructure. Before these attacks, the IDF had issued a warning to civilians in the area to evacuate. In recent days, the IDF has intensified attacks on Hezbollah targets in Beirut. More than 50 Hezbollah targets have been attacked in the past week.
According to the IDF, one of the targets of the strikes by Israeli warplanes in Beirut on November 15 was an apartment that previously belonged to Nasrallah. The army said Nasrallah was targeted in his home during the Second Lebanon War in 2006, and the house was later remodeled. The IDF said the apartment was currently being used by Hezbollah for its activities.
