Lucknow. A public interest litigation demanding a CBI inquiry into the British citizenship of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was heard in the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court on Wednesday. The High Court has summoned the details of action taken on the complaint made to the competent authority of the Central Government under the Citizenship Act 1955. The High Court gave the order on the petition of Karnataka BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir. The court said that we would first like to know the decision of the Government of India, and what action they have taken on the complaint. The next hearing of the case will be on September 30.
The bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Om Prakash Shukla directed ASG Suryabhan Pandey to obtain information from the Union Home Ministry on this matter.
The court had once rejected the petition
. In July, the court had rejected the petition of this petitioner saying that if the petitioner wants, he can complain to the competent authority under the Citizenship Act. According to the petitioner, he has evidence that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. Due to this, he is ineligible to contest the election. Therefore, his election should be canceled. According to the petitioner, when no action was taken even after complaining twice to the competent authority, the petition was filed again.
During the hearing on Wednesday, S Vignesh Shishir appeared before the court in person. Shishir has demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. However, during the hearing, the court said that for the time being, attention should be paid to whether the Centre has received the complaint application. What decision or action will the Centre take in this regard?
