Assam : Amid the turmoil in Bangladesh, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said that only Indian passport holders will be allowed to enter the state from the trouble-hit country through designated entry points. "From our side, the instruction is very clear that we will not allow anyone to enter the state. Many students from Assam and other parts of the country are studying in Bangladesh. Last month, 78 students, including 60 from Assam, returned from Bangladesh. We will allow only Indian passport holders to enter Assam, while we will not allow others to enter the state," he said.
Assam Police and BSF did joint patrolling at many places
DGP Singh said in Tinsukia on Thursday that we have been continuously monitoring the situation for the last three days. When this development came to light there (Bangladesh), we immediately held a video conference with all the SPs, we also had a video conferencing meeting with senior BSF officials and the Union Home Secretary was also in that video conference. In Assam, four of our districts - Cachar, Karimganj, Dhubri and South Salmara, share their border with Bangladesh. Along with the BSF, the Assam Police is also ready as the second line of defence. Assam Police and BSF have carried out joint patrolling in several places.
Instructions to completely secure the India-Bangladesh border
DGP GP Singh further said that if anyone tries to enter, we will take action according to the law. He said that our border is now in a strong position. Assam DGP on Thursday held a security review meeting in Tinsukia district ahead of Independence Day on August 15. GP Singh said that according to our information, a group of ULFA-I is now on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. We discussed the way to neutralize this group and asked all concerned parties to remain alert so that the group cannot enter Assam and carry out any subversive activity in the state. Police, CAPF, Army and all intelligence agencies have been informed. Assam is now in a peaceful manner. I appeal to ULFA-I not to destroy the peaceful atmosphere. If anyone has any complaints, they can talk to the government. We are alert.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Indian government has directed the state government to completely secure the Indo-Bangladesh border so that no one can come inside the country. Accordingly, the Assam government is keeping a strict vigil in the border area and so far, no person has been able to enter our country except those holding valid passports and visas and genuine and authentic citizens of this country. However, I hope that the Indian government will make every possible effort and I am sure the Prime Minister is already doing so to ensure the safety of Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Christian people in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is facing a volatile political situation, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning from her post on August 5 in the wake of growing protests. The protests, led by students demanding the abolition of the quota system for government jobs, turned into anti-government demonstrations. A day after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Bangladesh's prime minister and left the country, President Mohammad Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country's parliament to form an interim administration, Dhaka Tribune reported. Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus has been appointed the head of Bangladesh's interim government, Dhaka Tribune reported. The announcement was made by Joynal Abedin, press secretary to the President of Bangladesh. The decision regarding the appointment of the head of Bangladesh's interim government was taken during a meeting between President Shahabuddin and coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement.
