New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic move, India and New Zealand on Monday signed a mega pact aimed at institutionalizing their defence and security ties. The agreement marks a new chapter in bilateral relations, focusing on trade, defence, education, and agriculture.

During his meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised concerns over anti-India activities carried out by certain unlawful elements in New Zealand.

Key Highlights of the India-New Zealand Agreement

  • Institutionalizing Defence & Security Ties: A roadmap will be developed for enhanced defence industry cooperation.

Modi Calls for Action Against Anti-India Elements

Speaking at the press conference, PM Modi emphasized the need for strict action against terrorism.

“Whether it is the Christchurch attack (2019) or the Mumbai attack (2008), terrorism in any form is unacceptable,” Modi stated.

He further expressed concern over illegal elements in New Zealand carrying out anti-India activities and urged the Kiwi government to take decisive action.

“We are confident that India will continue to receive cooperation from the New Zealand government against these unlawful activities,” Modi added.

India & New Zealand to Begin Free Trade Talks

In a move to strengthen economic ties, Modi announced that both countries would begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Key Sectors for Trade Growth:

  • Dairy & Food Processing – Expanding cooperation in agri-based industries.
  • Pharmaceuticals – Encouraging investment and collaboration.
  • Technology & Innovation – Exploring new avenues for partnership.

“This will boost the potential of mutual trade and investment,” Modi said.

Indo-Pacific & Regional Stability

Both leaders discussed the evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific, reinforcing their commitment to regional peace and stability.

“We believe in the policy of development, not expansionism,” Modi said, in a veiled reference to China’s growing influence in the region.

New Zealand’s PM Luxon echoed similar sentiments, stating:

“We are committed to addressing shared concerns over our respective interests in contributing to a prosperous Indo-Pacific.”

A New Era of Cooperation

The India-New Zealand partnership is set to grow stronger with increased defence collaboration, trade negotiations, and security cooperation. As both countries align their strategic interests, this agreement marks a significant milestone in their diplomatic relations.
