For the third consecutive season, Delhi Capitals suffered heartbreak in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final, falling 8 runs short against Mumbai Indians in the 2025 summit clash on Saturday.

Skipper Meg Lanning expressed disappointment at her team’s inability to cross the final hurdle, despite an excellent season that saw them finish at the top of the points table.

Lanning Reflects on Another Missed Opportunity

At the post-match presentation, the former Australian international admitted that Delhi was in a strong position, but their inability to form one solid partnership cost them the title.

Lanning’s Statement:
"We have had another good season, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get over the line. Congrats to Mumbai – you have been excellent throughout the season. Chasing 150 was a pretty good target for us; one more partnership could have been enough, but I’m proud of the team."

Delhi’s Chase: Another Final, Another Collapse

Delhi started their innings under pressure, losing both Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma cheaply.

Jemimah Rodrigues attempted to stabilize the innings, but her dismissal added more pressure.
Marizanne Kapp kept Delhi’s hopes alive with boundaries and big hits, but Natalie Sciver-Brunt dismissed her at a crucial moment.
Youngster Niki Prasad fought hard to take the game deep, but in the end, she ran out of partners.

Despite finishing as table-toppers, Delhi Capitals once again failed to deliver in the final.

Did the Week-Long Break Hurt Delhi’s Momentum?

When asked whether the long break after topping the league stage affected their performance, Lanning dismissed the idea and instead emphasized the importance of stepping up in big games.

Lanning’s Response:
"There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Performing on the night is important, and Mumbai were too good tonight. We haven’t been able to put our best performance in the final on the board, which is disappointing, but that’s cricket."
