BJP Secures a Landslide Victory
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the BJP headquarters on Saturday after the party achieved a historic victory, securing 48 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections. Addressing a massive gathering of party workers, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to the people of Delhi for their overwhelming support.
“I am happy that the people of Delhi are now relieved of AAPda. I thank the citizens for their love and trust in us. I assure you that we will work tirelessly to bring development to Delhi,” PM Modi said.
'A Debt We Will Return' – PM Modi
Calling the win "historic," PM Modi stated that the people's support is a responsibility the BJP will fulfill. “This is no ordinary victory. People of Delhi have rejected anarchy and ego-driven politics. AAPda has been completely wiped out,” he remarked.
Taking a dig at Congress, he alleged that the party is destroying its allies, citing the example of RJD. He also assured that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report will be presented in the first Delhi Assembly session and that those responsible for corruption will be held accountable.
‘Delhi to Experience Double Engine Sarkar’
PM Modi emphasized that Delhi’s youth, particularly those born in the 21st century, will now witness the governance of the BJP for the first time. “People will see how a double-engine government transforms Delhi, just like in Haryana. Delhi is not just a city but a mini India,” he said.
He also highlighted BJP’s stronghold in the national capital, stating, “There is no place in Delhi where BJP has not won. Every section of society, from different regions and linguistic backgrounds, has voted for us. The people of Delhi have always supported us in Lok Sabha elections, securing victory in all seven seats in 2014, 2019, and now in 2024.”
BJP Ends 27-Year Political Drought in Delhi
With just 22 seats, Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP trailed significantly behind. The BJP's victory marks the end of a 27-year-long political drought in Delhi, as the party last held power in 1998 when Sushma Swaraj was Chief Minister.
AAP faced a massive setback, with all its top leaders suffering defeat. Among those who lost their seats were Arvind Kejriwal (New Delhi), Manish Sisodia (Jangpura), Awadh Ojha (Patparganj), and Satyendra Jain (Shakur Basti).
A Historic Defeat for AAP
This election marks AAP’s worst defeat since its formation. The party had governed Delhi in 2013, 2015, and 2020, but this time, its policies failed to resonate with voters. Kejriwal had frequently accused the central government of obstructing governance and welfare schemes.
Following his bail in the excise policy case in 2024, Kejriwal stepped down as Chief Minister, appointing Atishi as his successor. However, AAP’s strategy of offering freebies did not appeal to the electorate this time, leading them to opt for a change.
PM Modi Calls It a Win for Development and Good Governance
Earlier in the day, PM Modi took to social media platform X to celebrate the victory. “I bow to my dear sisters and brothers of Delhi for this resounding and historic mandate to @BJP4India. We are humbled and honored to receive these blessings. It is our guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned in developing Delhi, improving the overall quality of life, and ensuring Delhi plays a prime role in building a Viksit Bharat,” he wrote.
