Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik appointed new ISI chief

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General of Pakistan's intelligence agency - Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). State television announced this on Monday. Lieutenant General Malik is currently serving as an assistant general at the army headquarters in Rawalpindi. He will take over his new assignment on September 30 and will replace the current Director General (DG) Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum. The ISI chief is appointed by the Prime Minister, but traditionally he exercises this power in consultation with the army chief. 
The post of ISI chief is considered one of the most important posts in the Pakistani army, which has ruled for more than half of the country's more than 77 years of existence and has so far exercised considerable power in matters of security and foreign policy. 

Lt Gen Malik has previously commanded an Infantry Division in Balochistan and an Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. He has also received the 'Sword of Honour' in his course and has served as the Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) as well as an instructor at the Command and Staff College Quetta. His appointment comes at a crucial time for Pakistan's intelligence agency which plays a key role in both domestic and international security operations. Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum was appointed as DG ISI by former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2021.
