New Delhi. Bollywood actress Tamannaah Bhatia's troubles are increasing. She has come under the radar of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). ED has called Tamannaah Bhatia for questioning in the HPZ app scam. In this case, the actress is not being questioned as an accused but in the matter of promoting this app.
Crores of rupees were defrauded through this app by promising to give people 4 thousand rupees daily on investing 57 thousand rupees. For this fraud, fake accounts were opened in the name of shell companies in different banks in which money was transferred from the investors. Some strings of the Mahadev app are also connected to HPZ.
The ED has started an investigation based on an FIR lodged at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Kohima (Nagaland). This FIR was registered under various sections of the IPC, 1860, and the IT Act, 2000. In this, naive investors were cheated
by promising huge profits in exchange for investing in mining Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. An app called HPZ Token was used for this. ED investigation revealed that thousands of investors have been cheated in this way.
Bank accounts opened in the name of different shell companies.
The modus operandi of the fraudsters was that they first lured the victims to invest through the HPZ token app and through online gaming and betting websites by promising to double the investment. Several bank accounts and merchant IDs were opened in the name of different shell companies to get investments. These accounts were used to make rotation/layering of funds obtained from crime.
The scam started in June 2021.
An investment of Rs 57,000 was promised a return of Rs 4,000 per day for 3 months. Initially, returns were given to win the confidence of investors, and also attractive offers of new investments were made, which led to more investors investing. The scam started in June 2021 and by August 15, 2021, the HPZ app and related websites became accessible. So far, the total amount frozen and confiscated by the ED in this case is Rs 497.20 crore.
