New Delhi. Former captain of the Indian cricket team Sunil Gavaskar is known for speaking his mind openly. Gavaskar has lashed out at former England captain Michael Vaughan's statement on Sachin Tendulkar's record of most runs in Tests. The former Indian captain clearly said that if this record of Tests is in Sachin's name then what is the problem? How will Test cricket benefit if England's Joe Root's name comes up on this?
Former England captain Joe Root has been scoring runs at a rapid pace in the last few days. This batsman, who is scoring centuries continuously, recently scored centuries in both innings of the Lord's Test against Sri Lanka. Root has become the batsman who has scored the most centuries in Tests for England. By scoring 34 centuries, he equaled Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. Joe Root has now come to the sixth position in terms of scoring the most runs in Test cricket. By scoring 12402 runs, he left behind former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said about Joe Root that he can break Sachin Tendulkar's record of most runs in Test cricket, 15921. If this happens, it will be very good for Test cricket. Sunil Gavaskar did not like this statement at all. While talking to Sportstar, he replied to Vaughan in his own language.
Gavaskar said, "Recently I heard someone saying that if Joe Root breaks Sachin Tendulkar's record of most runs in Tests, it will be good for Test cricket. Tell me what is wrong in Test cricket right now, if this record is in Sachin's name, what is wrong with it? If an English batsman breaks this record, how will it benefit Test cricket? After all, how will it benefit Test cricket? Can that English gentleman tell this?"
Gavaskar further said, “It is a common belief that the BCCI does not like Test cricket. Every season, the Indian team plays half a dozen more Test matches than other countries. Be it at home or while touring abroad. Just because the IPL is so successful, it does not mean that the BCCI is not interested in promoting Test cricket. This is something that is constantly being told by the foreign media.”
