Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The strike of resident doctors across the country over the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata has ended. After meeting Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Federation of Resident Doctors Association President Aviral Mathur said that we met Union Minister JP Nadda at his residence and presented our revised demands to him. He has assured us that he will provide a safe working environment for doctors. All our demands have been accepted, so we are withdrawing the strike.

Calcutta High Court gave instructions

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the investigation of the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). After this order, the CBI took over the investigation and a team of experts will leave for Kolkata on Wednesday morning.

Let us tell you that when the doctors' massive agitation continued for the fifth day, the bench headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam had also urged the agitating doctors in the state to end their work stoppage agitation and said that it is their responsibility to treat the patients coming to government hospitals. The court had directed the city police to hand over the case diary to the central investigating agency by this evening and submit all other documents by 10 am on Wednesday.

CBI will investigate from Wednesday

The CBI has taken over the investigation and a team of the agency officials from Delhi along with forensic scientists and medical experts will reach Kolkata on Wednesday, officials said. The court passed the order on a petition filed by the victim's parents seeking a court-monitored probe and several other PILs seeking transfer of the probe to the CBI.

The High Court's interim order came five days after the incident came to light and five days before the Sunday deadline given by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the police to complete the investigation. The Chief Minister had said that if the Kolkata Police failed to solve the case by August 18, she would hand over the investigation to a central agency.

Rape and murder of female doctor

Let us tell you that the body of a postgraduate female doctor was found in the seminar hall of the government hospital on Friday morning. There were serious injury marks on her body. According to the preliminary postmortem report, she was sexually assaulted. Despite arresting civil volunteer Sanjay Roy in this connection on Saturday, Kolkata Police has failed to calm the allegations of laxity in the investigation and tampering with evidence. This incident has caused outrage among junior doctors in the state's medical campuses and beyond.

Meanwhile, the Joint Forum of Doctors of the state has called for a strike in the Out Patient Departments (OPDs) of all government and private hospitals in the state on Wednesday in protest against the RG Kar Hospital incident. Also, junior doctors and trainees in West Bengal held a work stoppage agitation on Tuesday in protest against the incident and demanding adequate security for hospital staff.
