Pragati Kharya, who was pursuing PhD in Earth Science at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), was found dead in her hostel room on Thursday. It is being said that she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of the room. Pragati lived in room number D-116 of Hall number 4 of IIT Kanpur. There was a stir in IIT after hearing the news of Pragati's suicide. On receiving the news of Pragati's suicide, the ground slipped under the feet of the family members.
Pragati was a final-year student.
Pragati was the youngest daughter of Govind, a resident of Sanigavan in Chakeri. Apart from Pragati, Govind has three sons. Govind's family is well-educated. His elder son Satyam is an officer in HDFC Bank, the second son Shivam is an engineer in NTPC, and the third son Sundaram works in Infosys. The youngest daughter Pragati took admission in PhD in December 2021.
'Our souls trembled'
After hearing the news of Pragati's suicide, the family members were distraught. Wherever they were, they started crying. No one was in a position to speak or talk. After gathering a lot of courage, Pragati's uncle Manoj told the media that Pragati was a very cheerful girl, but he could not understand why she did this. Manoj says, "My soul trembled after hearing about Pragati's suicide. My young daughter is gone." Remembering Pragati, Manoj says that she used to work very hard day and night for admission in IIT. Pragati's father Govind says that he cannot believe that his daughtetowas so weak that she could commit suicide. Govind said that his daughter was not like this. She used to talk to the family on the phone every day. Two days ago, she had gone to IIT Roorkee, where she had shown her research paper. The police should investigate this matter with complete impartiality as to why she did this?
