Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced that the 'Uniform Civil Code' i.e. UCC will be implemented in the state from January 2025. Almost all the preparations for this have been completed. By doing this, Uttarakhand will become the state to implement the 'Uniform Civil Code' after independence. Actually, Uniform Civil Code covers areas like marriage, divorce, maintenance, property rights, adoption and inheritance. UCC is a uniform law for all irrespective of religion, caste, sect of the person. Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, who first filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2015 regarding the implementation of UCC, says that it has nothing to do with religion. What will happen in Uttarakhand with the introduction of UNIFORM CIVIL CODE?

-Marriage registration will be mandatory. Registration facility will be available at Gram Sabha level also.

-There will be a uniform law for divorce irrespective of caste, religion or sect. Currently, people of every religion in the country settle these matters through their personal laws.

-Polygamy or polygamy will be banned. The marriage age of girls, irrespective of their caste or religion, will be 18 years.

-There will be a right to adopt children of all religions, but a child from another religion cannot be adopted.

-The practices of Halala and Iddat will be stopped. Girls will get equal share in inheritance as boys.

-Registration of live-in relationships will have to be done. Aadhar card will be mandatory. Couples between 18 and 21 years of age will have to give consent letter from their parents.

-A child born out of a live-in relationship will have the same rights as a child of a married couple.

– In this draft of Uniform Civil Code, Scheduled Tribes have been completely excluded. There has been no interference with transgenders and religious matters such as worship methods and traditions.
