To become a PCS officer of any state, one has to appear in the State Public Service Commission exam, which is conducted every year. The syllabus of PCS matches to some extent with the syllabus of UPSC, which is why students preparing for UPSC also appear for the PCS exam.
Difference between IAS and PCS
1. The post of IAS comes under the Central Government. The selection process for this All India Administrative level post is organized by the central institution UPSC. Whereas, the post of PCS comes under the State Government. Candidates selected in the recruitment examinations of the State Administrative Service become PCS officers.
2. IAS officers are appointed by the President. Whereas, PCS officers are appointed by the Governor.
3. IAS can serve in any state on contract for some time. Whereas, PCS officers can work only in their own state.
4. After completing the training, IAS has to work as a Deputy District Magistrate (ADM) in the state administration for some time. After this, they get the charge of the district. At the same time, many times PCS gets promoted to the post of IAS on the approval of the state governments.
What is their salary?
IAS gets the pay scale of the central government. After the seventh pay commission, the salary of an IAS ranges from Rs 56,100 to Rs 2.5 lakh per month.
PCS gets the pay scale of the state government. At the same time, the highest pay level of PCS is 15, under which they get a salary of Rs 1,82,200 to Rs 2,24,100. The salary of PCS officers is different in all states. In UP, the salary of PCS ranges from Rs 56,000 to Rs 1,32,000.
