Kolkata. The CBI on Thursday arrested Ashish Pandey, considered a Trinamool Congress youth leader, in a corruption case against former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh. Officials said that Pandey is said to be close to Ghosh. Pandey was already under the scanner of the investigating agency CBI and was questioned by the CBI on September 30. Sandip Ghosh was arrested on September 2 in a corruption case. Later, the agency took him into custody on August 9 in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at a medical college in Kolkata.

In its FIR filed on the direction of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI has registered a case against Sandip Ghosh and three private entities of Kolkata - Ma Tara Traders, Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah, Ishan Cafe, 4/1, Belgachia and Khama Louha. During the action, the premises of all these entities named in the FIR were searched. The agency has registered an FIR against Ghosh and private entities under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (fraud) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

It is noteworthy that on Tuesday, thousands of people marched for five kilometers in the metropolis, continuing their protest against the incident of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. The protesters in the march were carrying placards demanding justice in the case and raised slogans during this. Organized under the banner of 'Joint Platform of Doctors', the people involved in this rally marched from College Square to Ravindra Sadan via JL Nehru Road and demanded safety and equal rights for women.

The protesters in the march waved their mobile phones with flashing lights. The rally caused traffic to slow down in some areas near New Market and Esplanade, which are crowded with people shopping for Durga Puja. The rape and murder of a junior doctor in a seminar hall of a government hospital had triggered nationwide protests. The body of the female doctor was found on August 9 with severe injury marks.
