New Delhi. The month of October saw a rise in the prices of both home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali, but the price of vegetarian thali was still higher than non-vegetarian thali. According to Crisil's monthly 'Roti Rice Rate' report, the price of vegetarian thali increased by 20 percent in October. The price of non-vegetarian thali, which was declining for the last 12 months, increased by 5 percent. People who prefer chicken instead of dal and vegetables had to pay less price last month.

This increase is mainly due to the increased prices of onion, tomato, and potato. Crisil's report says that the vegetarian thali has become expensive due to the rise in the price of vegetables. On the other hand, the non-vegetarian thali has been less affected due to the presence of chicken in it. The vegetarian thali includes roti, vegetables (onion, tomato, potato), rice, dal, curd, and salad, while the non-vegetarian thali includes chicken instead of dal.

The reason for the rise in vegetable prices is
that the price of vegetarian thali increased by 20 percent in October, while the price of non-vegetarian thali increased by 5 percent. The main reason behind the increased prices of vegetarian thali is the increase in the prices of vegetables like onion, tomato, and potato. The price of onion increased by 46 percent and that of potato by 51 percent, due to heavy rains in September. Due to rains in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the onion crop is getting delayed, and the stock of Rabi potatoes has also decreased. At the same time, the arrival of new potatoes is expected to start from December to January.

Tomato prices rise
Tomato which was sold at Rs 29 per kg in October 2023, became Rs 64 per kg in October 2024, which is a jump of 120 percent. The rains in September in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh damaged the crops and the arrivals were less than the demand. However, prices are expected to stabilize in November with new supplies of tomatoes coming from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. The price of tomatoes accounts for 14 percent of the total cost of a vegetarian thali.

Effect of pulses and fuel prices The
price of pulses, which is 9 percent of the cost of a vegetarian thali, also increased by 11 percent. This increase is due to a shortage of stock and festive demand. However, the price of pulses is expected to fall with the arrival of new crops in December. At the same time, the reduction in fuel prices by 11 percent compared to last year has prevented the total cost of the thali from increasing further.

Increase in thali prices every month
On a monthly basis, the price of vegetarian thali increased by 6 per cent and that of non-vegetarian thali by 4 percent inpercent. The main reason for this was a 39 percent increase in the price of tomatoes and a 6 percent increase in the price of onions. Also, the price of vegetable oil has also increased by 10 percent in October. Further increase in the non-vegetarian thali was avoided due to stable prices of chicken.
