Why are dolls beaten on Nag Panchami? (Why are dolls beaten on Nag Panchami)
According to the mythological tale, a boy was a great devotee of Mahadev. He used to go to the temple to worship Lord Shiva every day. That boy used to see the snake god in the temple every day. Once in the month of Sawan, when that boy came to worship the Shivalinga with his sister, then pleased with the worship of the brother and sister, the snake god came and sat near them. The boy's sister got very scared seeing this. She thought that the snake might bite her brother, so she started beating the snake with a stick. Due to this, the snake got badly injured. The brother was very sad about the condition of the snake. At that time, the priest present in the temple said that due to the sister tormenting the innocent snake, it has got the snake curse, due to which your sister will have to suffer many serious consequences. When the brother asked for a way to get rid of this curse, then the priest asked him to make a doll of cloth.
As per the instructions of the priest, the boy made a doll of cloth and started beating it 11 times in the forward direction and 11 times in the reverse direction. Then he buried the doll deep in the ground and after that, he worshipped the snake. As soon as the brother did this, the sister got rid of the snake curse. It is said that since then the doll started being beaten on Nag Panchami so that the snake god does not suffer any kind of pain.
