As per UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment & Promotion of Teachers and Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2025, published by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently, industry professionals with expertise can be appointed vice-chancellors directly.

In addition, it was stated that marking of at least 55 percent of the ME or MTech PG diploma holders is sufficient for someone to work as an assistant professor for entry but this was not qualifying the individual in UGC-NET.

The University Grants Commission has approved the draft regulations. Chairman Jagadesh Kumar stated, "The quality of said 2018 UGC regulation should also say the same thing Governor/chancellor makes the appointments of VC. The only thing that is changed in this regulation is the details of the person who sets up the committee. That has to be done and it helps in decision making."
