Ambala: Many people are confused about whether they should work out after dinner or not. People believe that it is very harmful, while the youth consider it an important part of fitness. MBBS Dr. Ankit Mittal shared his opinion on this with Local 18. He says that the time and method of working out can affect your digestive system.
It is wrong to work out after lunch or dinner. Doing heavy workouts immediately after dinner can harm your health. After eating food, your digestive system remains active, and doing heavy exercise at this time causes the body to spend energy in workouts instead of the digestion process. This can affect digestion. This can cause problems like heaviness in the stomach, cramps, or vomiting.
This is how the harm happens.
The doctor further said that digestion is a slow process, in which the body converts food into small molecules. After eating food, the body needs enough time and energy to digest the food. If you exercise during this time, the body's energy goes into muscle activities instead of digestion, which can delay digestion. Problems like acidity and gas can arise. There may be a complaint of heaviness in the stomach.
The right time to work
Experts recommend that there should be a gap of at least 1-2 hours after eating, after which light exercises like walking or yoga can be done. This improves digestion and helps in digesting food faster. Heavy exercise should be avoided at night, as it can affect the quality of sleep.
What is a healthy option?
A light walk of 10-15 minutes after eating stimulates the digestive system and reduces gas and bloating. It can be beneficial to do some light yoga asanas like Vajrasana after dinner, which helps in improving digestion.
