What is the story of the formation of Shaktipeeth?

There is a mythological story behind the Devi becoming a Shaktipeeth according to which Mata Sati's father Daksha Prajapati performed a great yagya at a place called Kankhal which is known as Haridwar. All the gods and goddesses including Brahma, Vishnu, and Indra were invited to that yagya but Lord Shiva was not invited. Mata Sati came to know about this. She went to her father Daksha to know the answer for not inviting her husband to the yagya. When Mata Sati asked this question to her father, he used abusive words for Lord Shiva. He insulted him. Mata Sati, enraged by the insult, sacrificed her life in the fire pit of the same yagya.

Lord Shiva became angry about getting this information and his third eye opened. He picked up the body of Mata Sati and placed it on his shoulder. Lord Shiva's Tandava continued. He headed towards Kailash. Seeing the danger of increasing destruction on the earth, Lord Vishnu started breaking the body of Mata Sati into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. In this way, different parts of her body fell at different places. This happened 51 times, in this way 51 Shaktipeeths were established.
