New Delhi. India is progressing very fast in mobile phone manufacturing. It is believed that soon the country will not need to import mobile phones. Big companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google have started making their premium phones in India. Now almost all mobile phones are being made in India. Even Chinese companies are preferring to make phones in India. Seeing this report, there will definitely be panic in the Chinese government.
This information has come out from a report, in which some officials have been quoted. However, no information has been given about who are the officials giving the information. Which department are they from and what position do they hold? According to the news published in the Economics Times based on this report, the need for imports has already reduced significantly due to increased production locally in India.
Which brands are making phones in India?
Recently, Apple has started manufacturing iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India. Along with this, Google has also started manufacturing its Pixel 8 here. Samsung is already manufacturing all its devices in India, including premium models like S24, Flip, and Fold devices.
Not only this, Chinese companies like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Realme are also manufacturing their phones in India. Also, domestic brands like Lava and Micromax are also involved in this race. According to the report, 99% of the mobile phones sold in India are being manufactured here, and the remaining 1% will also soon be produced by domestic suppliers.
Import demand will fall further
An industry expert in the report has estimated that the demand for smartphone imports will fall to only .0.25% by the end of the financial year 2024-25. The report also states that by the financial year 2023-24, only 3% of the total smartphones sold in India were imported, mostly iPhone Pro models and Google Pixel, which are now being manufactured in India.
But it is not just about self-reliance. Pankaj Mohindroo, president of the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), says, “We are proud to have achieved 100% domestic production, but we are not going to stop here. We are moving forward with the target of $500 billion in electronics production. We aim to turn India into a cost-competitive manufacturing destination for electronics exports.”
What are the reasons for the growth of mobile manufacturing in India?
This growth in mobile manufacturing in India is attributed to the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which was launched in the financial year 2020-21. The scheme was later revised and extended to six years, as most beneficiaries failed to meet the first year's targets due to COVID-19 constraints, except Samsung.
Now, under this scheme, mobile manufacturing in India is growing even faster, making the country not only self-reliant but also preparing to make its mark at the global level.
