New Delhi. Uttar Pradesh is the largest state in the country in terms of population. Bihar comes after UP in this matter. But, both these big states are far behind in indirect tax collection. The highest direct tax collection in the country is in Maharashtra. On the other hand, UP is in the ninth position in the country in terms of tax collection and about 15 times less tax is collected here than in Maharashtra, which occupies the first position.

Direct tax collection includes income tax, corporate tax, and securities transaction tax (STT). Tax is collected across the country through these three means and the contribution of the states goes directly to the government treasury.

Maharashtra's share is 39%
According to the data of direct tax collection released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in the financial year 2023-24, Rs 19.62 lakh crore direct tax was collected from across the country. Maharashtra is number one in direct tax collection. In the last financial year, Rs 7.62 lakh crore (Rs 7,61,716.30 crore) direct tax came from Maharashtra. Maharashtra's contribution to the total direct tax collection of the country is 39%.

In the financial year 2023-24, Uttar Pradesh received Rs 48,333.44 crore as a direct tax. This tax collection is about 15 times less than in Maharashtra. At the same time, only Rs 6692.73 crore tax was collected from Bihar, the country's second-largest state in terms of population, which is less than Rs 6845.32 crore in the last financial year 2022-23.

Karnataka is
in second place in direct tax collection after Maharashtra. In the last financial year, the state collected Rs 2.35 lakh crore in taxes. Delhi stood third with a tax collection of Rs 2.03 lakh crore. Tamil Nadu is in fourth place with a direct tax collection of Rs 1.27 lakh crore. Gujarat is in fifth place with Rs 93,300 crore.

Telangana is in sixth place in direct tax collection. In the financial year 2023-24, the state collected Rs 84,439 crore in taxes. Haryana is in seventh place with Rs 70,947.31 crore and West Bengal is in eighth place with Rs 60,374.64 crore. Uttar Pradesh comes in ninth place with a collection of Rs 48,333.44 crore.
