Chennai. Grandmaster Arvind Chidambaram won the Chennai Grand Masters title by performing brilliantly in the last two classical rounds. Grandmaster V Pranav remained undefeated throughout the tournament and became the winner of the Challengers title. In the Challengers category, Pranav needed only a draw against Grandmaster Luke Mendonca. He won the Challengers title with a draw.
There was a triangular contest for the top spot in the Masters category. In this, Arvind first defeated Grandmaster Levon Aronian in the Blitz Playoff. After this, playing with black pieces, he drew the second match. He won the next match against Parham M. Earlier on Sunday night, top-ranked Grandmaster Arjun Erigesi and Levon Aronian played a draw. Aronian played a draw with Grandmaster Amin Tabatabaei while Arjun agreed to a draw with Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
Arvind came out on top based on a better score in the tiebreak. While Aronian and Arjun played a two-game blitz playoff and both emerged victorious, leading to a sudden death match. Aronian held Arjun to a draw to make it to the final against Arvind. Arvind won the first match and drew the second to clinch the title.
