When will the Mumbai-Indore railway line be built?

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Monday approved the 309 km long new railway line project between two major commercial centers Mumbai and Indore. This project will provide the shortest rail connectivity between the two cities. Giving this information, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the total cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 18,036 crore. It will be completed by 2028-29.

Length of Mumbai-Indore Railway Line

This project is the result of PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for 'Multi-Modal Connectivity' which has been made possible through integrated planning. It will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services. Six districts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will come under this project. This will add about 309 km to the existing network of Indian Railways.

Highlights of the project

  • It will boost tourism in the region by providing a shorter route between the western/south-western parts of the country and central India.
  • This will increase the number of tourists at various tourist/religious places in the Ujjain-Indore region including Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple.
  • The project will provide direct connectivity to Pithampur Transport Hub (which has 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries) with the gateway port of JNPA and other state ports.
  • It will also provide direct connectivity to the millet-producing districts of Madhya Pradesh and onion-producing districts of Maharashtra, thereby facilitating distribution in the northern and southern parts of the country.
  • It is an essential route for transportation of commodities like agricultural products, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL).
  • Due to capacity enhancement, around 26 million tonnes of additional freight would be transported every year.
  • This will help in achieving climate goals and cutting down the country's logistics costs, reducing oil imports (18 crore liters) and reducing carbon emissions (138 crore kg), which is equivalent to planting 5.5 crore trees.
  • 30 new stations will be built under the project which will provide better connectivity to Barwani district.
  • The new railway line will provide connectivity to around 1,000 villages and an estimated 30 lakh population.
