Recently such cases are coming to light where people get pop-up notifications on their phones that say that they are eligible to receive income tax refunds. The Income Tax Department has asked people not to fall into such fraud and to talk to the Income Tax Department officially.
What is this scam?
Under this scam, a pop-up notification or message comes on your mobile. The message says 'Congratulations, you are eligible for an income tax refund of Rs 15,000. Verify your account details 524XXXXXX77 to get the refund. If this is not your account, then click on the link given below and enter the correct details of your account.' When you click on the link and enter your bank details, the money disappears from your account.
What did the Income Tax Department say?
In a tweet on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Income Tax Department has said that people should not fall prey to such messages. Do not enter your credit card or bank account information by clicking on the link. If you have any doubts or need any information regarding your income tax refund, then talk to the Income Tax Department officially.
