New Delhi. Pakistan's limited overs team captain Babar Azam recently resigned from his post. Babar was made the captain for the second time. Babar became disillusioned with captaincy after the report submitted to the PCB by limited overs head coach Gary Kirsten. According to cricket board insiders, it was clear that Babar wanted to leave the captaincy after the T20 World Cup in July. Pakistan's performance was very poor in this World Cup played in America and West Indies.
A source close to the team told PTI, "Babar Azam was not happy with the comments and recommendations of Gary Kirsten and even assistant coach Azhar Mahmood and felt that he was solely blamed for the team's disappointing performance. After parts of Kirsten's report became public, Babar had indicated to the cricket board that he was not interested in remaining the captain.
The insider said that Babar expressed disappointment to the board officials that the PCB did not consider his past performance and results. The board also did not show the necessary trust and confidence in him. According to sources, Kirsten had discussed the dressing room atmosphere as well as the behavior and non-cooperation of some players in England and the T20 World Cup in his report to the board. Kirsten is not very impressed with Babar's ability to withstand pressure as a captain. According to him, after the mental stress and criticism since last year, his role in the team as a specialist batsman is more important.
The PCB is in no hurry to announce the name of the captain in the white ball format. It has asked selector Asad Shafiq and some members of the selection committee to recommend a name after thorough discussions. The source said, 'Board President Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that he wants information about all the official discussions by the selection committee. This will also include the opinion of both the foreign head coaches of the team. This will maintain transparency and a clear reason for appointing the captain will be known.'
